Chapter 3

Somewhat to my surprise, the rest of my stay in Italy was more fun than I’d anticipated. I signed up for a few guided tours around the city and made a few new English-speaking friends from both the U.S. and Great Britain. These relationships were strictly platonic, though they served their purpose for all of us, and by the time my flight left for home I was feeling upbeat, refreshed, and confident. I did think of Celeste quite a bit, especially while I was on the plane, and I wondered if she had done the same for me. Still, the time had come to move forward and not dwell in the past.

Almost as soon as I touched down, though, my schedule and thoughts were preoccupied with a new development. While I’d been away, my sister Brenda and her boyfriend, Greg, had decided to get married. In a way, they credited me—all the talk about my trip to Italy had inspired them to make travel plans of their own, it turned out, and somehow they had decided to turn it into a honeymoon. Now the wedding plans were in full swing and as the sister of the bride, I was smack in the middle of the whole circus.

“You look a little down,” my sister remarked one day while we were waiting for yet another dreadful fitting session to begin at the bridal store. “Are you annoyed that I’ve been taking up so much of your time?”

I was grateful that Brenda wasn’t making me and the other bridesmaids wear gaudy colors, extravagant ruffles, or puffy monstrosities that resembled the leftovers from someone’s high school prom. Still, even the relatively simple dresses she’d picked out for us required endless adjustments and appointments, to say nothing of her bridal gown requirements. My own dress just refused to stay up in the front no matter what the seamstress did.

“No,” I said, forcing back an unpleasant emotion that threatened to bubble up in my chest. It wasn’t right to be jealous of my own sister, surely. I decided to hedge her question with a half-accurate response. “To tell you the truth, I was thinking about Italy. It’s kind of weird to think of you and Greg going there when I just got back.”

“Well, you can go again next time you need a vacation.” Brenda seemed quite pleased with herself. “I’m really glad I made you go on that trip after all. I knew you’d return a different person, and it seems I was right. You’ve barely mentioned Toni since you came home.”

“That’s true. I’m not sure you’ve figured out the real reason for that, though.”

“Oh? What do you mean?” Brenda asked.

“I mean my going back there alone on my next vacation wouldn’t really solve the problem I’m referring to.” Then it tumbled out, just like that—my whirlwind romance with Celeste, the ambiguous way we’d left things when she headed home, the fact that she and I had exchanged a few cordial but predictably generic emails since my return.
